NEC may tie-up with Matsushita Communicationdate: August 20, 2001 Japan's Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper reported the number one mobile phones makers, Matsushita Communication and number two, NEC Corp will hold a briefing on Tuesday to announce a 3G mobile phone tie-up. Matsushita Communications is 56.3% owned by consumer electronics giant Matsushita Electric Industrial. The paper reported that the two companies will co-operate on making of next generation 3G handsets and developing software for the mobile terminals. "We will make an announcement with NEC on Tuesday regarding mobile phones, but we cannot give any details at this time,'' said a spokeswoman for Matsushita Communication. In a bid to further strengthen their leading positions in the world's second largest telecommunications market, the deal marks the first major 3G tie-up among Japan's top mobile phone makers to complete against European handset makers. NEC has also been actively involved in W-CDMA technical trials and field trials all over the world in Isle of Man and FOMA. In early August Hutchison Whampoa announced that it has named NEC Corporation as a preferred supplier of 3G wireless devices.
