China Unicom selects AsiaInfo Billing Software for CDMA Mobile Networkdate: August 22, 2001 AsiaInfo Holdings, a provider of software products and infrastructure solutions for next generation network operators in China, announced it has signed a contract with China Unicom to build a billing system for its new CDMA network and can be adopted for 3G services. During the initial phase of the project, AsiaInfo will provide integration services and its convergent billing software, AICBS (AsiaInfo Convergent Billing System) to eight provincial subsidiaries of China Unicom. Upon completion of the project, the billing system will serve approximately 30% of the customer's national CDMA network capacity. This new technology is 3G compatible and offers a flexible solution for mobile operators in their impending transition toward 3G technology. China Unicom is the only mobile services provider in China that operates both GSM and CDMA networks. As of June 30, 2001, the company serviced more than 20 million GSM users. China Unicom is still unsure which technology to use for 3G, but TD-CDMA will be the likely selection in China supported by the government.
