More Analysis Needed in US 3G banddate: August 22, 2001 The General Accounting Office (GAO) relesaed a report today suggesting that if the current schedule to auction 3G spectrum at 1755-1850 MHx band is maintained, the federal government will make decisions affecting US national security without knowing the full extent of the risks it faces or steps available to reduce those risks. While the DOD study provides preliminary information about DOD systems and operational requirements, it does not contain information on critical considerations, which are necessary for decisions on DOD's ability to vacate the entire band or share all or part of the band industry. According to DOD officicals, the following considerations (1) were outside the scope of its study or (2) were not included in its study because of a compresses time schedule and lack of information on alternative spectrum and development of 3G systems.
