Korea to Issue CDMA2000 License on Satdate: August 24, 2001 The Ministry of Information and Communication plans to issue a 3G license based on the the CDMA2000 technology mobile on Saturday, the ministry said Friday. A 14-member policy review panel, formed by the ministry in July, is in the final stage of screening the business plan that was submitted by the LG Telecom-led consortium, the sole bidder for the license. The issuance, if made, will conclude eight months of the government's efforts to select the provider of the service. Industry insiders have said that LG and its partners will get the nod from the government, especially since there were no problems associated with the bid and plans for the operations of the mobile communications network. Hanaro Telecom, Thrunet and Powercomm are other key players within the consortium made up of over 1,000 companies to land the domestic 3G CDMA2000 project. CDMA2000 uses standards adopted from the code division multiple access system developed by Qualcomm. Government officials have said that of the 1.15 trillion won that must be paid by the service provider, it will accept 220 billion won in payment within a short period of time, while the remainder can be paid back, interest free, over the next 15 years.
