Demark TDC has Faith in UMTSdate: August 24, 2001 TDC, the Danish telecoms company, has faith in UMTS and believes that it will overcome the teething problems. TDC managing director Henning Dyremose says the company's attitude towards UMTS is unchanged compared with a year ago but that it will consider the UMTS costs in a matter-of-fact manner. Dyremose counts on TDC to win a UMTS licence but is not prepared to pay more than what it is worth. Telecoms consultant Torben Rune of Netplan, recommends TDC and other mobile telephony companies not to invest in UMTS as new technologies for wireless data transmission will be launched within the next year that are cheaper and faster than UMTS. It is thought that there has been a drop in interest in the licenses, which was quite low anyway, because the National Telecoms Agency failed to issue clear guidelines. The licenses each have a minimum price tag of DKK500m (EUR67m). The agency is currently taking questions from interested parties and will do so until 28th August, after that it has requested that registration documents be handed in by 5th September. Bidding opens on Friday 22nd September, with licenses to be issued in October. TDC, formerly Tele Danmark, is a Danish-based European communication provider organized as seven main business units; TDC Tele Danmark, TDC Mobile International, TDC Internet, TDC Switzerland, TDC Cable TV, TDC Services and TDC Directories A/S. TDC is the main provider of communications services in Denmark, the second-largest communications provider in Switzerland and holds significant interests in a range of communications companies across Northern and Continental Europe. Today, SBC Communications owns a 41.6% stake in TDC and the remaining shares are held by individual and institutional shareowners all over the world. http://www.teledanmark.dk
