Japan Telecom and J-Phone to mergedate: August 25, 2001 Japan Telecom and J-Phone group announced that the boards of the four regional J-Phone companies agreed to merge into one entity. The merger is expected to be completed on November 1, 2001. As a single entity, J-Phone will be in a position to play a leading role in delivering to consumers the high-speed data and 3G mobile phone services that will shape the future of the industry in Japan and to complete with NTTDoCoMo. An official from the company said, "the moved will streamline operations and enhance competitiveness in this rapidly changing and competitive environment." The merger will put Vodafone, who holds 45% stake in Japan Telecom and 46% in J-Phone, into a solid foothold in the worlds' second largest mobile data market and a first hand experience into the 3G mobile business place. J-Phone scheduled to lunch 3G services in the next fiscal year of June.
