Pentagon Warns the Gov of Taking 3G Airwavesdate: August 30, 2001 The top U.S. military official has warned the US government that selling its critical airwaves 2500-2690 MHz and the 1755-1850 MHz frequency bands to the commercial wireless industry before comparable spectrum is found would threaten national security, according to a letter. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Henry Shelton and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld also said funds would have to be made available for any move, according to the Aug. 27 letter sent to Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle. "Forced relocation will have serious consequences on our national security and increase the risk to military personnel,'' the Pentagon officials said in their letter. "No solution is feasible unless and until comparable spectrum has been identified for the displaced DoD functions.'' The government has been searching for additional spectrum to meet demand by the nation's wireless carriers like Verizon Wireless and AT&T Wireless Services who want more airwaves for high-speed 3G wireless mobile services. Rumsfeld and Shelton said they would continue working with the White House, FCC, Congress and the Commerce Department to find a solution. Once Congress returns from its summer break next month, Rep. Chip Pickering, a Mississippi Republican, is expected to introduce legislation that would guarantee compensation to those government agencies that move off airwaves to make way for commercial services.
