SK Telecom Launches New Phone Servicesdate: August 30, 2001 SK Telecom has become the first company in the world to market 3G mobile phone services, it claimed. SKT spokesman Kwon Chul-keun said it plans to launch trial services of the high-speed and interactive video conferencing services by the end of this year for commercial operation early next year. The packet-based Internet Protocol (IP) technology, which forms the core of 3G networks, means that consumers can access the Internet constantly through their telephones, he said. By transplanting mobile IP technology with the video conferencing platform, the new technology will also be able to track the longitude and latitude of each user. New video conferencing technology will enable users to enjoy high-speed data communications at rates of up to 153.6kbps. Unlike the existing circuit-based video conferencing technology, the packet-based system can share phone lines of mobile subscribers due to an increase in the effectiveness of bandwidth-hungry traffic, the company said. Packet switching is a core network transmission technique that involves splitting information into packets of data that are routed independently through the network across different routes to the final destination.
