Orange Positive in Danish UMTS Auctiondate: August 31, 2001 Michael Latimer, member of the Orange board of directors, says it is OK for countries like Denmark to charge for UMTS licenses as the licenses represent a major value for the holders. According to him, the prices charged for the European UMTS licenses are very cheap by global comparison. Latimer also says that Orange is set to continue investments in Denmark and expects Denmark to become one of the leading countries in the mobile development. The Danish auction of four 3G licenses seems to have attracted less interest than the authorities had been hoping for. The lack of flexibility offered by the country's Telecoms Agency is thought to be one of the major reasons that the operators are not showing much interest at this stage. Licensees will also be required to attain 80% population coverage with their own networks by 2009, and network sharing agreements are limited to the remaining 20%. Bidders have until 5th September to register their interest and the auction process begins around two weeks afterwards.
