Locals are worried on high-rise mastdate: August 1, 2002 Plans for a 50ft high-rise mobile phone mast on a pavement in Edinburgh, UK have been met by fierce opposition in the area. About 40 people have objected to the pole and two equipment cabinets which Hutchison 3G wants to put up in the city. They say the installation will block the pavement, dominate nearby homes and spoil views. They are also worried about health risks from the emissions that can cancer and headache. It is also claimed diagrams and maps showing how the mast would fit into the area are inaccurate. Hutchison 3G says there is nothing wrong with the site. Ann Mennim, from the area said local people were incensed by the proposal. A Hutchison spokesman said the strength of the emissions would be a fraction of World Health Organisation guidelines and added the drawings would be looked at to make sure they were accurate.
