A Road Test for UMTSdate: August 2, 2002 If you thought that video conferencing, movies, and online games were just for the home and office crowd, think again. They are actually just a few of the mobile applications that will be made possible by the new 3G UMTS standard. To determine the viability of these services under the toughest of conditions, DaimlerChrysler, Siemens Information and Communication Mobile, Sun, T-Mobile, Jentro and MBDS jointly tested a Mercedes-Benz S-Class equipped with a cornucopia of infotainment systems. Rear seat passengers had access to PCs with flip-up 15-in TFT monitors and wireless keyboards. Meanwhile, at speeds below 6 km per hour, the driver and front seat passenger could call up real time navigation and traffic data on a built-in touch screen monitor. The occupants also had broadband access to news services, an electronic office, the Mercedes-Benz portal and the Internet. In addition, the off-board navigation system included a wide variety of location-based information. The test, which was recently conducted in Berlin, was made possible by a new UMTS network and infrastructure provided by T-Mobile and Siemens. Siemens also developed and implemented many of the UMTS applications for the test vehicle.
