Orange to delay WCDMA rollout in Swedendate: August 7, 2002 Orange, a subsidiary of France Telecom, yesterday said it was planning to postpone the launch of its WCDMA 3G mobile phone service in Sweden. The PTS, Sweden's telecoms authority, said Orange was planning to postpone the roll-out of 3G in the country for another three-and-a-half years. Orange is the first of Sweden's four licence-holders to ask for a delay. It also asked to have its roll-out obligations lowered, reducing coverage to 8.3m people instead of the 8.86m originally planned. The outcome of Orange's request is being watched intently by its rivals in Sweden, where four other operators - Telia, Tele2, Vodafone and Hi3G, a unit of Hutchison Whampoa - are also committed to providing 3G services. Orange, which was awarded a 3G licence in Sweden in 2000, was expected to have the new 3G system up and running in that country by the end of next year.
