KDDI placed $100 million 3G orders from Samsungdate: August 8, 2002 - source: BWCS Japan’s number two mobile operator, KDDI Corp, has placed a US$100 million order for next-generation CDMA equipment with Korean manufacturer Samsung. KDDI is to begin upgrading its existing cdma2000 1X network with 1X EV-DO (evolution-data only) equipment later this year to increase data transmission speeds. Korean operators such as SK Telecom and KT Freetel and manufacturers like Samsung are leading the way in the development of the high data-rate CDMA equipment, which was originally developed by US vendor Qualcomm. Samsung says it is looking to expand into markets such as Japan and China as Korean operators are nearing the completion of their planned rollouts. The Korean manufacturer will be supplying KDDI with base stations and other mobile network equipment. KDDI claimed this week to have attracted almost half a million new subscribers to its cdma2000 network in July, to take its total customer base for the high-speed technology to over 1.64 million.
