Hutchison posted first half lost due to 3G
August 12, 2002
Hutchison Telecom Australia said Monday it will need to tap the
debt market for up to A$2 billion in 2003 and posted a first-half
loss of A$72.7 million as it puts money into 3G mobile infrastructure
ahead of a launch early next year.
"The remaining requirement of up to A$2 billion, we will look at
funding options from the debt market, probably in 2003," chief executive
Kevin Russell told the press.
Hutchison, which aims to be the first telco to roll out 3G in Australia
has said previously the roll out of its 3G network will need funds
of up to A$3 billion over the next five years.
Hutchison and its 3G partner Telecom Corp of New Zealand completed
a A$1 billion rights issue last month to fund the 3G rollout, which
is on track for launch in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane in the
first quarter of 2002.
