O2 will not buy license from Quam
August 13, 2002
Mobile operator O2 Germany said yesterday that it is not interested
in acquiring the 3G UMTS licence of Quam if it becomes available.
Last month, Quam backers, Sonera of Finland and Spain’s Telefonica
closed their mobile joint venture in Germany after just seven months
in operation. Without the two backers, Quam will not have the necessary
funds to rollout 3G services across Germany because of the tough
license conditions fixed by the telecom regulator.
Speaking in Die Welt, O2 Germany Chief Executive Officer Rudolf
Groeger said that he expected Quam to try and sell its 3G frequency
package, but that it was unclear whether the telecommunications
regulator would allow this.
Although not interested in the licence himself, Groeger said that
his company would want the licence to go to one of the original
purchasers, as opposed to a new entrant.
The German MVNO, Group 3G/Quam, launched GSM/GPRS services towards
the end of last year and had attracted almost 200,000 customers
by the end of June.
