Vodafone gets extension payment in Ireland
August 15, 2002
Ireland's telecoms regulator has granted Vodafone a deadline extension
for payment of a 3G licence fee, Vodafone said on Thursday.
Vodafone now has until September 12 to decide whether or not to
make the payment, a London-based spokesman for Vodafone said.
"Vodafone requested an extension under the rules of the tender.
The (regulator) granted that extension," he added.
Rival mmO2 made a $43 million up-front payment on Wednesday for
a "B" class licence, while Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa Ltd
agreed in June to pay 50.7 million euros for the "A" class 3G licence.
The 'B' class license offered to Vodafone demands 33% population
coverage by the end of June 2006, and 53% coverage by the end of
June 2008, and would have required Vodafone to pay a fee of EUR44.4
million, as the first installment of a EUR114.1 million fee phased
over 15 years.
