Hutchison enters Finland
August 27, 2002
Hutchison Whampoa has submitted a bid for a Finnish 3G licence.
The Hong Kong-based comglomerate, which already owns a license
to operate 3G networks in Ireland, UK, Sweden, Denmark, Austria
and Italy, has submitted the bid for the licence discarded earlier
this year by Sonera.
News of the bid came just a day after Hutchison announced the E1.3bn
purchase of Netherlands-based Kruidvat Group, owner of Superdrug
in the UK.
The acquisition of another 3G licence, bringing to 10 the number
of licences the company owns worldwide, comes as many other firms
review their 3G interest. Ten days ago, British mobile phone giant
Vodafone won a month long extension on the deadline to pay the 3G
licence fee in Ireland, raising speculation that it might abandon
its 3G plans here.
