Ericsson and Huawei Sign 3G Licensing Deal
August 29, 2002 - source: BWCS
Swedish equipment manufacturer Ericsson has revealed that it is
to license its 3G mobile infrastructure patents to Chinese counterpart
Huawei Technologies. The worldwide royalty-bearing agreement will
allow Huawei to develop, manufacture and distribute W-CDMA products
based upon Ericsson’s patents for 3G systems. The two companies
have also signed a reciprocal agreement which enables Ericsson to
market Huawei-developed technologies.
Torbjorn Nilsson, Ericsson’s senior vice president of marketing
and strategic business development, commented: “This agreement further
demonstrates Ericsson’s commitment to fully support, and co-operate
with local Chinese vendors in order to accelerate the development
of 3G mobile telephony and facilitate the market growth in China.
Ericsson is promoting 3G in China and is showing the way to the
rest of the industry by granting a license under terms to encourage
competitive accumulated royalty rate for W-CDMA.”
