3G Arrives in Taiwan
August 12, 2003 - source: BWCS
Asia Pacific Broadband Wireless has become the first operator to launch
third generation mobile services in Taiwan, switching on its 3G network
last week. While APBW missed its original launch target of April this
year, it is still some way ahead of rivals Chunghwa, Taiwan Cellular Corp
and Yuan-Ze Telecom, who are still busy rolling out their 3G networks
in time for a 2004 launch.
APBW’s chairman L T Wang said the company was aiming to sign up 710,000
subscribers before the end of the year, following an earlier statement
back in December that the 3G operation was expected to be profitable in
its first year of operation. Although voice service fees have been set
at 10-25% below current 2G rates, Wang said the company did not intend
to start a price war and would aim to attract customers with add-on services
such as mobile e-mail, chatrooms and online gaming. Data rates will be
on a par with those charged by rival operators for 2.5G (GPRS)- based
data services.
APBW paid NT$10.6 billion (US$302.8 million) for its 3G licence in February
2002, the highest amount paid by any of the five licence winners. The
network infrastructure, based on CDMA2000 1X and offering data rates up
to 153kbps, was provided by Nortel Networks. Higher data speeds of up
to 2.4Mbps will be available in the Taipei metropolitan area. The service
platform was developed by South Korean mobile operator SK Telecom.
