Vivendi Universal to sell its stake in Xfera

French telecoms and media conglomerate Vivendi Universal confirmed it will sell its 26.3% stake in Spanish 3G venture Xfera to other shareholders for a symbolic EUR1.

Xfera's shareholders include construction companies Fomento de Construcciones, Actividades de Construccion , Nordic telecom operator TeliaSonera and Spanish engineering and chemicals company Abengoa.

Xfera holds a license to roll out a WCDMA 3G mobile phone network in Spain.

Vivendi said it is in a position to sell its stake in Xfera following a July 15 decision by Spanish authorities that released the French company from a commitment to invest EUR840 million in Xfera's network.

In its 2002 annual report, Vivendi Universal said it carried investment and performance commitment with regards to Xfera worth EUR920 million and other banking liabilities worth an extra EUR48 million.
