Ericsson CEO in China said 2003 is the best year to start 3G
August 13, 2003
Lu Yong, strategic development director of Ericsson (China), said to
the press recently that as for new telecom carriers, it takes as least
one year to build a mature 3G network. Therefore, it is the best opportunity
for them to kick-off 3G networks in fourth quarter of 2003 or the first
quarter of 2004. Otherwise, they might miss a tremendous business opportunity
for the entire generation.
Lu pointed out that there are a series issues confronting Chinese carriers.
China is the center of world GSM manufacturing industry. He said vendors
in China need to know whether and when should the production lines in
China be upgraded to 3G standard and how much effort to put into 3G R&D.
The director went on to say that the development of 3G networks depends
mainly on the supports of the Chinese government. It can be seen from
the history of 2G and 2.5G that China's domestic vendors should focus
on the mainstream standard.
China should concentrate on the most popular 3G standard worldwide, because
that means the maximum exporting markets for Chinese 3G system and mobile
handset vendors.
