NEC e606 out of stock in the UK

3UK, a unit of Hong Kong's Hutchison Whampoa, informed its UK retail outlets that the popular NEC e606, which has been out of stock for several weeks, will be discontinued and that "the focus must now be on the e808."

The reason for this was that NEC did not order enough components to carry on producing the NEC e606 in large quantities because sales of the model was better than expected from Hutchison's 3G ventures in other parts of the world.

Retail outlets were promised further deliveries of the e606, but this hasn't happened and stocks have already ran out in some retail outlets.

In response, 3UK will now offer an extra free NEC e808 handset on the 3toGo plan when customers sign-up to the VideoTalk 750 plan.

Hutchison will officially announce its UK 3G subscriber numbers on August 21st. Telecom analysts estimate the company has signed up less than 90,000 customers and struggling to reach its intended target of one million subscribers by the end of this year.
