EDGE will help bridge the 3G gap
August 14, 2003
STMicroelectronics sees GSM taking the volume part of the wireless telephony
business for the next five to seven years with the GSM enhancement technology
EDGE bridging the gap between GPRS and 3G.
"EDGE will enhance the capabilities of GPRS so we are developing the
software related to this, which should be ready in one and a half years
from now," Aldo Romano, corporate VP and general manager of the telecoms,
peripherals and automotive groups at ST, told the press.
"The performance of this is not negligible," added Romano, "so it will
be taking the space while we are waiting for 3G - which will happen –
but which will take years before it takes a large share."
EDGE delivers a theoretical bandwidth of 384kbit/s. This compares with
the 115kbit/s theoretical bandwidth of GPRS.
Nokia is keen to see EDGE adopted in mobile networks to allow the provision
of more feature-rich services, which will give mobile phone subscribers
the motivation to upgrade their phones.
Nokia has a tri-band (GSM, GPRS and EDGE) - the 6220 - and plans to introduce
EDGE as a standard feature in most of its GPRS terminals from the second
half of 2003.
"I'm not saying there'll be nothing in 3G for five to seven years," said
Romano. "I'm saying that GSM, including EDGE, will take the volume for
the next five, six or seven years. It will take that time before 3G reaches
the level of GSM, which is why EDGE is extremely important in our view."
