NZ Telecom not worries by Vodafone's plan
August 16, 2003
New Zealand's Telecom Corp is playing down the threat posed by Vodafone's
plans to build a 3G network, saying it is already offering 3G "type" services,
the Dow Jones reported.
Vodafone New Zealand announced on Thursday that it is investing hundreds
of millions of dollars in deploying W-CDMA services within the next 18
months.
Vodafone NZ said the first trial services are expected to be up and running
within six months and Vodafone New Zealand has already garnered interest
in the 3G offering among its business users.
Dow Jones reported that Kevin Kenrick, NZ Telecom's general manager,
said the company "already has a big technology advantage over Vodafone...and
it's natural that competitors want to catch up."
He went on and said NZ Telecom has already been providing 3G type speed
services and the network is comparable to what Vodafone planned to build.
Kenrick also hinted that NZ Telecom might work together with Vadafone
to build out a nation-wide network, "The industry really should be looking
at cooperating to build a W-CDMA network," he said. "We're open to that
discussion."
