It was reported on Bloomberg news that 3UK, a unit of Hong Kong's Hutchison Whampoa, may not meet its full-year target of having 1 million customers for its 3G business in the UK.
Bloomberg reported 3UK may have only gained 150,000 subscribers in the UK with its US$16.7 billion 3G mobile investment, but 3GNewsroom.com predicts 3UK may only have signed-up 70,000 real customers which includes the 22% handset return rate.
In May, 3UK made deep 3G tariff cuts to attract more customers just 2 months after launching its service in late March, but due to poor coverage, enormous handsets and negative press; the sign-up rate was lower than expected.
Telecom analysts will be interested in how many subscribers have been enrolled and how much per month they are spending. If the data shows that 3G failed to wow with its video calling functions, rival UK mobile operators will delay their 3G rollout dates further.
A telecom analyst said, "Steep handset subsidies and aggressive voice discounting is likely to result in higher start-up losses and disappointing ARPU."
Hutchison Whampoa is expected to report its half-year results on Thursday, including its 3UK and 3Italy subscriber's level.
3Australia, a venture unit of Hutchison, announced strong half-year results last week and have signed-up the expected number of 43,650 subscribers as of 4th August on its 3G network.
The FT paper reported 3Italy, also a unit of Hutchison's 3G empire, gained 320,000 subscriber in Italy in the six months since rolling out its network.
