Partner awards contract to Nortel Networks

Israel's Partner Communications has notified Nortel Israel that it has won the tender to set up its 3G network, after Nortel lowered its bid again. The decision is not yet in writing.

Partner earlier notified Nortel Networks that it was the only company to reach the tender's final stage - financial negotiations - but Ericsson then submitted a new bid, cheaper than its previous one, and Partner asked both companies to submit new bids.

After the bids were submitted, Nortel's was still significantly cheaper than Ericsson's, and it won the tender. Sources inform “Globes” that that Nortel's bid was less than $100 million. The original bids, before the discounts, were $170 million.

Partner plans to establish its 3G network in the center of Israel in the first stage, later expanding it to outlying areas using EDGE technology.
