Nortel Networks, Datang Mobile Establish TD-SCDMA Laboratory
August 28, 2003
Nortel Networks and Datang Mobile opened a laboratory in Beijing today
in a move to explore the commercialization of the Time Division - Synchronous
Code Division Multiple Access (TD-SCDMA) technology in China.
TD-SCDMA is a Chinese 3G wireless technology combining the advantages
of CDMA and GSM. TD-SCDMA combines the unique spectrum efficiency of CDMA
with the possibility of asymmetric data-transfer provided by the Time
Division Multiple Access (TDMA) frame structure of GSM.
In 2000, TD-SCDMA was adopted by the International Telecommunication
Union (ITU) for the IMT-2000 family of 3G standards. It was also adopted
by the 3GPP. Nortel Networks has provided the core network and Datang
Mobile the access network. The laboratory plans to conduct tests in the
areas of interoperability, network performance and system functions based
on TD-SCDMA.
"The laboratory is one of the most advanced in China focusing on commercialization
of TD-SCDMA," said Robert Mao, president and chief executive officer,
Greater China, Nortel Networks. "It demonstrates our capability and commitment
in developing this Chinese 3G standard. The laboratory will promote further
acceptance of the standard and enhance Nortel Networks leadership position
in providing 3G solutions in China."
In order to promote the standard, China has allocated 155MHz frequency
for TD- SCDMA. The TD-SCDMA Industry Federation was recently formed to
promote the industrialization of the standard. Datang Mobile is a mobile
communication equipment manufacturer in China and specializes in research,
development, manufacturing and sales of telecommunication equipment. The
TD-SCDMA technology proposed by Datang Mobile on behalf of China was adopted
by the International Telecommunication Union and 3GPP.
