China to announce 3G test result in November
August 12, 2004
China is expected to announce results of its second phase 3G testing later in the year. The Ministry of Information Industry (MII), the telecommunication regulator, could announce the result for the testing on November 11. If so, it would be a significant step for China's long awaited 3G migration.
China's has conducted its second phase 3G testing for almost a year and will finish this September. The six local operators are testing a mixture of the three main 3G technologies, TD-SCDMA, WCDMA, and CDMA2000. The end of the testing phase would be a welcome sight for equipment manufacturers involved in the test as they have been footing much of the bill. They hope it would pay off in the long run with equipment contracts worth billions of dollars.
MII has drafted plans for the issuance of 3G licenses and is expected to make a detailed arrangement at the end of this year. A MII official said that China would begin commercial 3G operations before next June.
