VIVO and Motorola launch 3G trial in Brazil

VIVO and Motorola Industrial, the Brazilian subsidiary of Motorola, have launched a trial of Motorola's CDMA2000 1xEV-DO high-speed mobile broadband network solution on the carrier's network in Curitiba, Parana State. This 3G service will enable subscribers to experience high data rates -- at peak speeds of up to 2.4 Megabits per second (Mbps) -- that will provide them ready access to real-time services and applications such as e-mail, the Internet, music and file downloading, video and audio streaming.
VIVO and Motorola also demonstrated the exciting capabilities possible with CDMA during the Winter Festival in Campos do Jordao, Brazil. Festival goers visiting the VIVO booth at this annual event had a first-hand opportunity to enjoy enhanced mobile access via the VIVO network to the Internet and multimedia applications.
"Leading edge solutions that give our customers access to advanced mobile services, such as the CDMA2000 1X network solution, allow VIVO to offer 3G services to customers throughout Brazil in the areas where this technology is already available," said Javier Rodriguez, VIVO chief technology officer. "Now with this CDMA solution we can give our customers even faster access to data applications with download speeds that will be comparable to other high speed alternatives like DSL."
"The high data capacity of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO can greatly increase CDMA operators' capabilities to offer new services for data and multimedia applications," said Jose Figueroa, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola's Global Telecom Solutions Sector for the Latin America and Caribbean Region. "These new services help stimulate demand and usage that can generate new revenues for operators while providing subscribers with higher speed mobile broadband networks and ready access to the information, entertainment and content that they want while on the go."
For purposes of the trial Motorola upgraded existing Motorola Base Transceiver Subsystems (BTS) with the addition of a new Multi-Channel CDMA Module to enable CDMA2000 1xEV-DO service.
