Ixia provides GCF video telephony certification test suite

August 2, 2006

Ixia, a provider of IP performance test systems and member of the GCF, announced that its IxMobile test platform is the only one that has been independently validated to support the minimum amount of the test cases selected by the GCF for video telephony application enabler certification. Now that IxMobile has achieved this validation status, GCF member handset manufacturers will be able to certify their devices for video telephony using IxMobile.

"3G video telephony is a growing market, but one with unique challenges," said Richard Webb, directing analyst for wireless with Infonetics. "For these services to be successful, it is vital to maintain and improve service quality in order to gain mass market acceptance. Aspects such as interoperability of the handsets and shorter call setup times are essential to meeting users' expectations of the video playback experience."

The GCF focuses on handset certification to ensure conformance and interoperability. The association, comprised of wireless network operators, handset manufacturers, test equipment manufacturers, and test laboratories, agrees on certification requirements for all aspects of handsets and provides mechanisms for official certification. Most recently, the organization created a certification test suite for video telephony by selecting a series of test cases established by the International Multimedia Telecommunications Consortium (IMTC).

IxMobile is an easy-to-use, out-of-the-box operational test platform that emulates video telephony terminals communicating with handsets under test for protocol analysis, conformance, and interoperability testing.

"Being a test platform for use by the GCF for the video telephony application adds to a number of Ixia industry firsts," said Errol Ginsberg, CEO of Ixia. "Video telephony is viewed as an important application enabler by the GCF for 3G adoption and Ixia is helping to enable conformance to standards of all equipment. IxMobile will be an essential part of that process."

IxMobile comes pre-equipped with all necessary profiles to execute the GCF video telephony certification test suite. Users simply choose which test case to run, and execute it. Programming is not necessary. The system incorporates an intuitive, user-friendly GUI interface running on Windows XP and offers multiple interface options, including ISUP, ISDN PRI, and BRI. It also features a 3G data card option. Finally, IxMobile offers an extensive set of data logging features, as well as complete individual and summary call reports for problem isolation.
