Fujitsu Siemens Computers offer notebook with Vodafone 3G data card

Fujitsu Siemens Computers and Vodafone are jointly developing wireless UMTS solutions that enable mobile terminal users to send and receive data at high bandwidths. Hans-Dieter Wysuwa of Fujitsu Siemens Computers and Karl Ludwig Dilfer of Vodafone have already put their signatures on a cooperation agreement in Düsseldorf. The first package offers, consisting of a Fujitsu Siemens Computers notebook and a Vodafone Mobile Connect Card plus data tariff contract are already available at retail outlets.
"We are currently monitoring a sharp increase in the number of business customers using UMTS technology to transfer data at high bandwidths with their notebooks and handhelds," said Hans-Dieter Wysuwa, Senior Vice President and General Manager Germany, Fujitsu Siemens Computers. The market researchers at Canalys have confirmed this observation and expect the number of users of 3G data cards and notebooks with integrated 3G to almost double in 2006 compared with 2005. In 2007, the total number of 3G cards and notebooks with integrated 3G sold in western Europe will exceed three million.
Karl Ludwig Dilfer, Sales Director at Vodafone Germany, is convinced that the joint venture will be successful. "I'm sure that the time will come when all retailed notebooks will have embedded UMTS mobile technology. The joint venture between Vodafone and Fujitsu Siemens Computers is an important strategic move for both companies. Fujitsu Siemens Computers notebooks with embedded Vodafone UMTS broadband technology give our customers fast, secure and cost-transparent access to mobile broadband services.
Vodafone is the first mobile communications provider in Germany to market mobile UMTS broadband technology. There is already UMTS coverage in over 2000 German towns and cities. Vodafone customers can use the service in over 50 networks around the world and in 30 different countries for fast mobile data transfers. Transmission rates of up to 1.8 Mbit/s are now possible with UMTS broadband."
Fujitsu Siemens Computers manufactures a range of products with integrated 3G/UMTS, including the LIFEBOOK E8210 professional notebook and the CELSIUS H240 mobile workstation, which already incorporate UMTS antennas and are available at retail outlets.
