Vodafone Malta launches 3G service

August 17, 2006

Vodafone Malta is once more at the forefront of mobile technology. It is the first mobile operator to launch the new 3rd generation technology in Malta. 3G technology opens doors onto a whole new range of services such as Video Calling, Full Track Music Downloads (FTMD), Faster Internet Content, as well as Broadband Speed Laptop Connectivity. Vodafone Malta introduced the 3G network on Wednesday 16th August.

The very first mobile phone call was made on the Vodafone Malta network 16 years ago, and the first call on GSM was again made on Vodafone Malta network in 1997. Today Vodafone live! with 3G gives customers access to a new range of exclusive services, as well as an improved new menu enabling faster navigation with fewer clicks needed to get to what a customer wants to view.

Vodafone customers will now benefit from faster download speeds and improved quality of sound and images through the new and enhanced services made possible by 3G.

Customers will be able to make person to person video calls for the first time and download longer and better quality film previews. In order to effect Video Calls, both caller and receiver need to have a 3G phone and be in 3G coverage area. Vodafone live! with 3G brings MP3 player quality music to the latest 3G handsets that Vodafone has on offer. Through the full track music downloads customers can now save entire tracks from a constantly updated, extensive catalogue of their favourite music.

Vodafone currently has available four top of the range 3G mobile phones from world-class manufacturers, namely Samsung, Sharp and Motorola. These mobile phones include Tri-band, Video Calling, Video recording, MP3 Player, Bluetooth, Memory Card Slot and USB connectivity.

"This is an exciting day for Vodafone here in Malta, as well as for all our customers who can now experience the new world of 3G technology" says Hatem Dowidar, CEO of Vodafone Malta. "Vodafone customers can now contact their family and friends by video call, and if you are a music fan, you can now download full track music and have the latest music available on your 3G mobile phone. Our business customers can now get broadband speed connectivity in Malta and when roaming in key countries. With 3G we continue our track record of always providing state-of-the-art technology and services to our valued customers"

3G services are initially available in St. Julians, Sliema, Gzira, Ta' Xbiex, Msida, Hamrun, Marsa, Floriana, Valletta. During the coming months coverage will be extended to cover further areas. When a customer moves into areas still without 3G coverage, the service will automatically switch to the normal 2.5G network.

August all 3G prepaid and postpaid customers will benefit from free browsing for three months on Vodafone live! portal. 3G customers are also being offered 30 free video minutes per month and customers can make additional video calls at 25 cents per minute. The cost to download a full song is 75c.
