More than 275 million CDMA2000 users worldwide

The CDMA Development Group (CDG) announced that the number of 3G CDMA2000 subscribers reached more than 275 million users in 2Q 2006. CDMA2000 1xEV-DO subscribers continued to gain ground, adding six million new subscribers in 2Q 2006 to reach 36 million users worldwide, more than double that in 2Q 2005. Over the past year, the total cdmaOne and CDMA2000 subscriber base grew by 24 percent to 335 million total users across the globe.

"CDMA2000 continues to lead the migration from 2G to 3G across all six continents," said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. "With the introduction of EV-DO Rev A this year, the CDG expects to see this growth leadership continue."

The rapid subscriber growth of CDMA2000 is due to its ability to meet the diverse mobile communications needs of consumers, small businesses and large enterprises in most any market worldwide. Solid performance, ease of migration, backwards compatibility and availability of a broad range of affordable devices are just a few of CDMA2000's success factors. Over 166 CDMA2000 operators in 73 countries are offering a broad range of applications, including; voice services, multimedia messaging, entertainment, information, mobile commerce, push-to-talk, position location and broadband Internet access.

CDMA2000 continues to dominate 3G market share, accounting for 80 percent of total 3G subscribers worldwide. In the past year, the Americas have assumed Asia's stronghold in 3G, representing 53 percent of total CDMA2000 subscribers, with 36 percent of CDMA2000 users in North America and 17 percent in the Caribbean and Latin America. The Asia Pacific region accounts for 45 percent of total CDMA2000 users. The growth of CDMA2000 in Europe, the Middle East and Africa has also begun its climb, with more than 6 million users now accounting for 2 percent of total CDMA2000 subscribers.

Analysts predict that the number of 3G CDMA users with CDMA2000 and WCDMA devices will continue to grow rapidly and these CDMA-based technologies will capture a greater proportion of the global marketplace. By 2010, close to 1.2 billion 3G CDMA users are expected to account for 41 percent of the global wireless subscriber base. In the same period of time, analysts predict that the percent of users who access broadband services will increase dramatically, with 1xEV-DO alone counting more than 340 million subscribers worldwide.
