Glo Mobile ready to launch 3G in Nigeria

August 31, 2006

Glo Mobile has announced its readiness to launch the latest telecommunication technology, the 3G network, following the successful test-run of the platform on the Glo network by Alcatel.

Globacoms Chief Operating Officer (COO), Mohamed Jameel, announced at a press conference held at the companys Head Office in Lagos that 3G has been successfully tested on our network by Alcatel. We are now ready for the commercial launch once we get the clearance from NCC (Nigerian Communication Commission).

The COO said since the successful completion of the test-run of 3G, Glo Mobile has demonstrated its capabilities to selected corporate clients while other subscribers on the network can visit the Glo World at Adeola Odeku to see, feel and enjoy live demonstration of 3G.

This is the second time that Globacom has been in the forefront of pioneering comprehensive services using the latest technology in Nigeria, having introduced a bouquet of services using the 2.5G technology at launch in 2003 when other operators were running on the 2G platform.

The COO said the 3G network will also revolutionize the way data is transferred and relayed digitally. It enables a much faster transmission of data, voice, broadband internet and multimedia services over a range of frequencies, he stated.

Jameel added that the Glo Mobile 3G network will allow customers to do video call, video streaming and high-speed mobile internet access from their 3G mobile handset. It also offers other advanced mobile services such as Phone to Phone Video Telephony, Video Greeting Kiosk and Video Mail Box.

Other services available on the advanced network are Phone to Fixed PC Video Telephony, Fixed PC to Phone Video Telephony and Video conferencing on both Phones and PCs.

3G thus provides a convenient means of sending and receiving data, of sharing information while it is hot, fresh, and in demand. This clearly is the very essence of telecommunication, he noted.

Jameel said the 3G facilities have been tested on the Globacom network in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, adding that the capability would be extended to other parts of the country shortly. He said the urge to test and make the Glo network to be 3G ready was driven by Globacoms passion to avail subscribers and Nigerians at large the benefits of advances made in information and communications technology for the purpose of spurring economic and socio-political success.

"The successful implementation of the 3G test-run within Glo Mobile network in a very short time frame, providing high quality 3G applications reflects the close and outstanding partnership between our two companies," said Jean-Paul Br, Alcatel General Manager for Globacom project.
