date: 19th December 2000, source: Newsbytes

Japanese cellular network operator NTT DoCoMo's plans to begin commercial operation of the world's first third-generation (3G) mobile phone service next year move a step closer today with the announcement by a supplier of the start of its shipments.

Osaka-based Matsushita Communication Industrial Co. Ltd has begun sending base transceiver station equipment to NTT DoCoMo.

The latter company plans to have 3G services - offering high-speed wireless data, music and video transfer - up and running by May 2001.

Matsushita has concentrated its own 3G development on wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) development and standardization activities.
