Lucent, Qualcomm Complete 3G Trials

date: 20th December 2000, source: All Net Devices

Lucent Technologies and Qualcomm say they have completed the first successful data transmissions at the highest possible speeds for high-speed Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) third-generation (3G) networks.

Specifically, the companies were testing a cdma2000 1xEV system. They claim the successful test means that field trials with wireless operators that use Lucent equipment can begin in early 2001.

Data transmission speeds of as high as 2.4Mbps were recorded during the tests, the companies said in a statement. They said the tests also included successful handoffs from data to voice.

Lucent says it expects to integrate the 1xEV technology into its equipment and to make it commercially available early in 2002. The two companies announced the cooperative effort earlier in 2000.
