Ericsson, Mobitel to explore 3G evolution in Lanka

date: 31st December 2000, source: Sunday Observer

Ericsson, a world leader in mobile technologies and Mobitel, a leading mobile operator in Sri Lanka, announced an agreement between the two companies to evaluate the migration to 3G (third generation) wireless technologies. The collaboration encompasses early studies of end-user behaviour and usage, new business logic as well as technical requirements.

Both companies are committed to exploring, marketing and technological innovation in the Sri Lankan wireless telecommunications market. The focus of the agreement is in understanding local consumer needs and customising technology so that it is readily accessible and easy to use. This includes wireless internet enablers such as WAP and then moving to 3G.

Ericsson leads in 3G systems development and has set up W-CDMA demonstration centres in Canada, UK, Japan, Germany, Spain, Sweden and China. These full-fledged 3G systems are used to test the delivery of new applications and services, with customers in key markets, leveraging Ericsson's global customer base and 10 years of research in 3G technologies. Ericsson further strengthened its position as world leader in 3G systems when it recently signed 17 out of 22 contracts with leading operators in the world for an end-to-end commercial 3G system, based on W-CDMA technology.

Mobitel Pvt Ltd. is a joint venture between Sri Lanka Telecom and Telstra Corporation of Australia.
