CommWorks Provides 3G Wireless Data Technology for TELUS Mobility

date: December 10, 2001

CommWorks Corporation, a wireless data access technologies, announced today it will provide 3G technology to TELUS Mobility, a provider of wireless voice, data and Internet services across Canada. CommWorks technology will dramatically increase data speeds on the nationwide network, allowing TELUS Mobility clients to experience new and richer wireless data and Internet applications.

Irfan Ali, president, CommWorks Corporation, said, "Our wireless data network technology will allow TELUS Mobility to deliver robust applications at faster data speeds, giving their clients a richer wireless experience."

TELUS Mobility, which has approximately 2.4 million clients across Canada, has selected CDMA2000 for its move to 3G and plans to offer new high-speed wireless services in early 2002.

The key advantage of CDMA2000 technology is its compatibility with existing digital wireless networks, as well as with new technology being developed. This compatibility allows wireless operators to use existing spectrum to deliver 3G Mobile IP data services to subscribers. With peak data rates of up to 153 kbps in high mobility applications, this increase in speed promises to open the door to a new generation of mobile applications for wireless subscribers. The higher speed networks allow service providers to evolve wireless data offerings from today's text-only format to advanced content and applications, rich with graphics, color and multi-media features. Wireless operators also benefit from the increased voice capacity and extended battery life of subscriber units afforded by CDMA2000 networks.

The Canadian wireless market is expected to grow 20 to 30 percent per year, and to grow to 16.6 million subscribers by 2003, according to TELUS Mobility. By 2005, it is estimated that there will be more than 100 million users of wireless Web services in North America alone.
