FT and DT go Dutchdate: December 11, 2001 - source: BWCS Two of the Netherlands’ five mobile operators have announced that they will be co-operating on the rollout of their third-generation UMTS networks. France Telecom’s majority owned subsidiary Dutchtone and rival operator Ben, which has Deutsche Telekom as a backer, have issued a joint statement outlining their agreement. The two companies say the network sharing deal will speed up the deployment of their networks and save them a significant amount of money; it has been estimated that such agreements could save each operator as much as US$700 million. Earlier this year it was revealed that Mm02’s Dutch subsidiary Telfort had been discussing a possible network sharing agreement with the country’s dominant operator KPN Mobile, although no firm plans have been issued. Mm02, the former cellular division of BT, has been promoting the rollout of just two national 3G networks in the Netherlands to be shared by the five licensed operators. The Dutch government awarded UMTS concessions to the country’s five incumbent operators following an auction in July 2000; the winning bidders paid a total of NLG5.9 billion (US$2.5 billion) for their licences.
