Sharp develops IrDA for next-generation mobile handsetsdate: December 11, 2001 A Sharp Corp. transceiver module is said to comply with the Infrared Data Association's 1.1 Medium Speed IR standard for 1.152-Mbit/second transmission in a 1-meter range. Today's transmissions are based on IrDA's 1.2 Low-Power standard, deemed insufficient for high-speed, content-rich 3G-phone transmissions. The GP0-2W1002YP transceiver module uses a high-power LED device and newly developed IC to transmit data from 9.6 to 1,152 kbits/s over 1 m. Operating voltage is 2.4 to 5.5 V. An I/O pin links the module to a controller LSI that operates on 1.8 V. Samples are available for about $2.90.
