Italy extends license termsdate: December 12, 2001 - source: Siemens UMTS NewsDesk Italian Communications Minister Maurizio Gasparri told the European Union Commission that the government will extend the duration of Italy's 3G mobile licenses by five years to 20 years, from 15. The ministry will also extend the duration of current GSM, and Total Access Communication System, mobile licenses as well as those for fixed-line telecoms services by five years. Last month, Italy has also been looking to alter its license conditions. The Communications Minister, Maurizio Gasparri, has revealed he is studying a possible extension to the duration of license terms from 15 years to 20, following the French decision to extend its own 3G licenses to 20 years. He said: "We are only estimating, studying the file. For the moment we only gather ideas and a lot of documents." If the government does bow to pressure from the license holder to extend their lifespan, it will be a further blow following the failure of the auction last year to raise the expected amount for the government. Gasparri did not mention any plans to consider lowering the license fee though, probably as it was already lower than the government had originally expected to raise.
