Malaysia expects to announce next-generation technology very soondate: December 13, 2001 The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (CMC) is expected to announce early next year the technology standard to be used for the country’s third generation mobile telephony or 3G infrastructure rollout. CMC chairman Tan Sri Nuraizah Abdul Hamid said that the CMC’s recommendation has been forwarded to Energy, Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Amar Leo Moggie for his approval. “After consultations with various industry players to get their feedback, we have made a decision on the standard to be recommended,” Nuraizah told reporters at a press conference. However, she declined to reveal which technology standard would be adopted, and said that an announcement was planned before February when the CMC issues the tender documents - or Applicant Information Package (AIP) - for the 3G spectrum allocation exercise. The CMC’s recommendation will come from among several competing standards, including WCDMA and CDMA2000. The 3G services are expected to be introduced locally by late 2003 or early 2004 after the issuance of spectrum assignments in July next year at the latest. Last month, Maxis and Technology Resources Industries have both said that they are looking to the 3GVNO model rather than acquire licenses and expand any existing networks. It has been the Malaysian government's intention to force consolidation amongst the five operators in the industry and so it is highly likely they will allow 3GVNOs to exist.
