Centennial Dominicana and Lucent Complete First 1X Wireless Data Call in Dominican Republic

date: December 13, 2001

Centennial Dominicana and Lucent Technologies today announced the completion of the first 3G CDMA2000 1X wireless data call in the Dominican Republic. The call is a significant milestone as Centennial's CDMA2000 network expansion continues. Lucent is supplying equipment for the network under a U.S.$16 million agreement between the two companies.

At Centennial's facilities in Santo Domingo, advanced mobile Internet services, including wireless Web browsing, e-mail and video streaming, were sent and received via laptop computers and PDAs at speeds of up to 153 kbps, about 10 times faster than what is available today. The commercial launch of Centennial's CDMA2000 1X service will take place in early 2002 in Santo Domingo.

"Our completion of the first 3G CDMA2000 1X data call in the Dominican Republic demonstrates our commitment to providing our customers with cutting-edge services that enhance their lifestyle and productivity," said Erik Perez, president of Centennial Dominicana. "Our 3G network, provided by Lucent, will deliver advanced high-speed data services, integrating this CDMA network with our product portfolio to offer broadband access. Our 45 kilometers of optical fiber and our LMDS wireless network, both in the capital city, offering ATM, Frame Relay, IP and soon Gigabit Ethernet services, will expand and give our users access to up to 153 kbps at any point in our national CDMA2000 1X network through PCS Centennial Dominicana."

Lucent has supplied Centennial with CDMA2000 1X channel cards and a packet data platform, Flexent base stations and mobile switching center equipment and software.

Lucent's 3G CDMA2000 1X equipment will enable Centennial to effectively double its voice capacity, in addition to providing high-speed data transmission capabilities. Centennial will be able to provide these new voice and data services using its existing radio frequency spectrum and its current Lucent-supplied CDMA infrastructure.

Centennial Puerto Rico and Lucent announced the completion of a 3G CDMA2000 1X high-speed data call in November 2001.

CDMA2000 is an advanced and efficient wireless technology being introduced worldwide and an international 3G standard established by International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Centennial's existing Lucent base station equipment can be enhanced to accommodate CDMA2000 technology by a simple channel card and software upgrade.
