Telesp Celular and Lucent launch advanced mobile network in Latin America

date: December 13, 2001

Telesp Celular, the largest mobile operator in Brazil, and Lucent Technologies today announced the introduction of advanced mobile network services in Latin America. Using CDMA 1X equipment from Lucent, Telesp Celular is now offering high-speed wireless data services in São Paulo.

The network consists of Lucent Flexent base stations, which were supplied as part of a U.S.$130 million contract signed between the two companies in July 2001 to overlay Telesp's existing 2G network in São Paulo, which was supplied by another vendor. Lucent has installed and activated base stations covering the city of São Paulo and will continue to expand this network. The Guarulhos section of the São Paulo metropolitan regional network will become active before the end of this year and the Alphaville section will be operating in January 2002.

The agreement between the two companies also includes CDMA 1X channel card and software enhancements to Lucent-supplied base stations currently installed in the metropolitan areas of greater São Paulo and Santos. These simple upgrades will provide Telesp with high-speed data transmission capabilities, enabling mobile Internet services such as wireless e-mail, access to corporate applications and real-time messaging initially at speeds of up to 144 kbps, and increased voice capacity that CDMA 1X technology makes possible.

"Our companies are technological leaders in Brazil and this contract demonstrates the strength of CDMA 1X technology to launch innovative, high-speed data services, which are now a reality in our country," said Renato Furtado, president of Lucent Technologies Brazil.

Lucent Technologies is the leading provider of network infrastructure for Telesp Celular's network, having built wireless networks based on CDMA in various regions and cities in the state of São Paulo, the largest cellular market in Brazil.

CDMA 1X can effectively double voice capacity and initially provide data transmission speeds of up to 144 kbps. Future releases of CDMA 1X will provide data transmission speeds of up to 307 kbps, a nearly 20-fold increase from what is currently available on 2G networks.

These high-speed data transmission capabilities enable mobile operators to introduce advanced mobile Internet services, including wireless e-mail and real-time messaging. The service delivers these improvements in existing radio frequency spectrum and provides a high-speed "always-on" Internet experience to CDMA 1X subscribers.
