Specification Partners Approve Use of 3GPP Marking on Products and Servicesdate: December 14, 2001 The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) name and logo is to be made available for use by manufacturers and service providers whose products are based on the Project's specifications. The Project's partners have agreed to permit implementers of the specifications to mark their equipment and documentation with the 3GPP logo and the name 3GPP. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has registered "3GPP" as a trademark on behalf of the 3GPP Partners. This arrangement is entirely voluntary and will not involve or imply any certification by 3GPP or any other body of the claims by manufacturers or service providers to compliance with the specifications. However, it will provide a basis of reference for users, network operators and other manufacturers and service providers, giving an assertion of compatibility with other products and services also based on the 3GPP specifications. The 3GPP specifications are highly respected within the mobile telecommunications industry and are produced by the Project in a rigorous manner. Consequently, implementations based on these specifications are deemed to be of good quality and to meet interoperability criteria. Whilst many in the telecommunications industry worldwide are familiar with the work of 3GPP, it is at present largely unknown as a name and logo among users. The decision by the 3GPP partners to permit the use of the 3GPP name and logo is expected to result in an improved awareness of the significance of the specifications produced by 3GPP as 3rd Generation networks, terminals and services are launched.
