Monaco Telecom, Siemens and NEC test mobile multimedia applications over the principality's UMTS networkdate: December 14, 2001 Monaco Telecom, a subsidiary of Vivendi Universal, today began testing mobile multimedia applications over the the principality's UMTS/3G network, together with Siemens and NEC. Siemens and NEC supplied the third generation (3G) mobile network, the mobile devices and the multimedia applications. With its seven radio sites (base stations and antennae) the UMTS/3G network covers the complete area of the prinicipality. The building of the network began in the beginning of 2001. The UMTS/3G network is completely integrated into the existing communications infrastructure; calls can be made to the GSM network as well as to the fixed network from the UMTS/3G network. Monaco will be the first European country to test multimedia applications in an urban environment. The tall buildings and dense population create particular challenges for the building of the network. As future UMTS/3G rollouts will be first offered in cosmopolitan areas, the principality holds a pioneering role for 3G technology. The UMTS/3G applications in Monaco allow the sending and receiving of emails on the move, mobile Intranet and Internet access, listening to hi-fi quality music, mobile viewing of videos, the location based service "Monaco on Air" (a mixture between yellow pages and a map of the area) as well as mobile video conferencing with several users. For the the purpose of the tests a UMTS/3G device is attached to a laptop or organiser. Data rates of 384 Kilobits/s can be achieved, i.e. 40 times faster than today's mobile standard, GSM. All the applications have been developed by Siemens and its partners. NEC has supplied the first UMTS/3G terminals.
