Seven companies submitted applications for next-generation licenses in Taiwan

date: December 18, 2001

Taiwan's Ministry of Transport and Communications, the industry regulator, expresses at present that the application course of the tendering for 3G licenses has closed on December 18 of 2001. There were 7 companies whom submitted applications to tender for five 3G licenses on Tuesday and this will be the Asia's first competitive auction.

Gao Kai-sheng, Vice Director with Taiwan Ministry of Transport and Communications, thinks that the bidding income of the five 3G licenses won't reach the aim -- 60 billion TWD ($1.8 billion).

Gao Kai-sheng expresses that 7 companies have confirmed to tender for 3G licenses at present. The 7 companies include Zhonghua Telecom Group, Pacific Telesis Group, Far East Group, Koos Group, Shide Group and VW Group, plus one more whom was not named.

Hesays that the base price of the 5 3G licenses is 33.6 billion TWD ($973 million).

Gao Kaisheng expresses that the bidding income can reach 60 billion TWD based on the estimation made by Ministry of Transport and Communications.

In October, Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation and Communications has finalised the terms of the bidding process for 3G licenses. Five 3G licenses are to be issued by the end of the year, from which the government plans to raise at least TWD $33.6 billion. The licenses would be for 15 years and cover all of Taiwan. Minimum bids will range from TWD$4.2 billion to NT$7.6 billion, based on the bandwidth.
