First live call in Russia: Siemens continues its run of success with UMTS

date: December 18, 2001

With the first live UMTS connection in Russia, Siemens Information and Communication Mobile (IC Mobile) has offered further proof of its lead in the field of 3G mobile networks. Together with Russia’s leading mobile carrier Mobile TeleSystems OJSC, Siemens IC Mobile demonstrated the efficiency of Siemens technology and the installed test network.

The technological basis for successful voice and data transmission was a complete UMTS network which, alongside the necessary send and receive components for UMTS (the ‘NodeBs’, as they are called), also includes mobile switching centers for circuit- and packet-oriented voice and data connections.

With the startup of the UMTS test network in Moscow, Siemens IC Mobile in cooperation with its partner NEC has now carried out successful tests for 3G mobile radio with more than 15 carriers in Europe and Asia. The tests demonstrated voice calls and data transmissions both within UMTS test networks and with existing GSM and fixed networks across national borders.

Siemens IC Mobile started operating a complete UMTS telecommunication network for test purposes in Padua, Italy, as recently as the end of October. Testing in Padua focused among other things on connecting with national and international telephone networks and transmitting video data. Video data transmission had already been demonstrated by Siemens IC Mobile and NEC on the Isle of Man and Monaco. As well as voice, live images were transmitted from terminal to terminal, mobile intranet and internet access was set up via UMTS and UMTS/3G applications as receiving of emails on the move, mobile viewing of videos as well as location based services were provided.

Finally, Siemens technicians set a new world speed record a few weeks ago: for the first time in a test network it demonstrated wireless surfing on the internet via UMTS at six times ISDN speed (a rate of 384 kbit/s) on a mobile phone. This means Siemens IC Mobile has laid the technological foundations for the commercial introduction of efficient mobile data and multimedia applications via UMTS.
