KDDI to launch 1x in April 02date: December 20, 2001 Japan's second-largest mobile phone operator KDDI Corp. said Thursday it is on track to launch its CDMA2000 1x 3G mobile service starting in April. The company had delayed the launch until Q2 2002 to April from its original schedule of this fall. Originally expected to be launched at the end of the year, the delay has been blamed on the slow development of infrastructure software. But KDDI's President Tadashi Onodera told reporters on Thursday the implementation of the new systems has been smooth so far, and said he is confident of the launch of the service in April. KDDI's 3G service will use a wireless protocol called CDMA2000 1x that gives data speeds up of to 153 kbps developed by Qualcomm. As a transitional service before launching a CDMA2000 1x based 3G service, KDDI began its high-speed mobile Internet services in December that provide users with a range of new applications, including a moving image distribution service, which can be run over the existing cdmaOne network. CDMA2000 1X provides nearly double the voice capacity of 2G cdmaOne systems. CDMA2000 1X provides a more capable, spectrally efficient, timely, lower cost path to next-generation services. CDMA2000 1X was first introduced in Korea in October 2000 and to date, has approximately 2.5 million subscribers. Additional CDMA2000 1X launches are expected in 2002, including in the United States, Japan, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand.
