IPDR Makes Gains in Europe, Middle East and Asia; Proliferation of Next-Generation Services

date: December 20, 2001

Today, Internet Protocol Detail Record Organization (IPDR.org), announced the success of Phase I of its Europe, Middle East & Asia (EMEA) outreach program. The program consists of outreach to global companies involved with the delivery of Internet and 3G services; the program also includes the development of strong liaisons with key international associations, organizations and standards bodies on the next-generation wireless specification.

IPDR.org already has over a dozen European members, and sees the region as ripe for rapid adoption of the IPDR Standard (also known as the Network Data Management-Usage specification or NDM-U).

The NDM-U specification supports multiple languages to create interoperable usage records for next-generation services like Voice-over-IP and Wireless Internet access and applications on 3G networks. Upcoming version 3.1 includes additional clarifications of multi-currency issues.

In 1999, IPDR.org was formed to address the needs associated with delivering next-generation services to the marketplace. The founding member companies saw the emerging global marketplace for Internet Protocol-based services and recognized the need for a usage standard to allow for usage-based billing, QoS measurement and other unique metrics for next generation services.

With the addition of new member companies such as Nortel Networks and TeleGea Inc., IPDR.org is gaining momentum by working with both large and emerging companies to promote rapid adoption of the IPDR standard in 2002. IPDR.org's Aron Heintz stated, "IPDR.org and its members have devoted two years of technical work to create an international IPDR standard. We are working with European and international consortiums such as GSM and ITU-T to gain rapid industry-wide adoption, just in time for many companies deploying next-generation services in the upcoming months."
